A backyard unit sits in full view of the house it belongs to. Get the relationship wrong and it reads as a shed with windows, regardless of how well it's finished inside. Design cohesion comes from a small number of repeated decisions, not from copying the house. Detached units come in a wide range of shapes and styles, and the ones that succeed rarely reproduce the main building. A unit that mimics every detail of a 1920s bungalow tends to look like a scale model of one. What works better is picking three or four elements the eye actually registers from the yard, then holding those consistent across both buildings.
Everything else can differ. Interior layout, finish level, color temperature, even the general mood of the space can go a different direction without breaking the connection, because nobody stands where they can see the inside of both buildings at once. The two structures get read together only from outside.
That's where the effort belongs, and it's also where the city concentrates its rules. Detached units over 15 feet have to match the main house on finish materials, roof pitch, trim, eaves, and window orientation, or meet the approved alternatives.
To match the design of your new ADU to the main unit, you have to work outward from the largest surfaces to the smallest. Materials first, then roof and proportion, then everything else. The order matters, because a mismatch in siding or roof slope is visible from the street while a mismatch in door hardware is not.
Material continuity does most of the work. Siding in the same profile, roofing in the same family, trim at a similar weight, and window frames in a matching finish will carry a connection even when the two buildings share no other feature.
Portland's approved list for detached units runs to wood, composite board, vinyl, and aluminum, with siding in a shingle pattern or in horizontal clapboard or shiplap boards six inches or narrower.
Homeowners often get into trouble chasing detail. Reproducing brackets, corbels, or leaded glass on a 600-square-foot structure can look like a costume. However, working out an interior design theme and applying it across both buildings keeps the pair related without turning the smaller one into a replica.
Roof pitch is the second thing the eye picks up, and it carries a requirement: A detached unit over 15 feet either matches the house's pitch or comes in at 6/12 or steeper. Eaves follow the same logic, matching the house or projecting at least a foot. Window orientation gets treated the same way, with square or vertical openings unless the house sets a different pattern.
Orientation deserves the same care. Turning the unit toward the alley or a side yard, away from the back door, often solves privacy and sightlines at once, and it can make a tight lot feel less crowded than the same structure squared up to the house. The direction an entrance faces shapes how the two buildings relate as much as any material choice does.
Code sets a maximum, not a good size. A detached unit can reach 20 feet, dropping to 15 if any part of it extends into a required setback, and its footprint can't cover more ground than the house. Building right up to those numbers is the most common mistake on a small lot.
What gets lost is the space between the two buildings. On a 4,000-square-foot lot, a unit at full size can leave a strip of yard too narrow to sit in, and both structures feel cramped for it. A smaller unit with real distance around it almost always lives better than a larger one pressed to the property line. On lots that tight, weighing a second story or an addition against a standalone structure is worth doing before the design goes far.
Making an ADU look like it belongs and making it livable as a separate home are two different jobs, and both have to work. Get the first one right and you can still end up with a unit whose front window faces straight into the kitchen. That's a hard space to rent, and a harder one for an adult child to settle into.
The two jobs operate at different distances, which is what makes them manageable together. From across the yard, materials and roofline carry the connection. Up close, the work shifts to doors, windows, and utilities. Treat them as separate problems and neither one has to be compromised.

All of these are cheap on paper and expensive once framing is up, so locking down utility routing, window placement, and access during the design and pre-construction phase is where the savings actually sit. The zero-step requirement in particular tends to surprise people late.
